Reminder: National EAS Test Form Three Report Due November 14

eas-logo_300On September 28, broadcasters in Michigan and nationwide conducted the first national test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) in five years and the first-ever usage of the IPAWS infrastructure.

Reminder on the reporting requirements:  Stations were required to go online and file ETRS Form Two by midnight on September 28.

ETRS Form Three, which asks for more detailed information regarding the test, is due on or before November 14, 2016.

By now your students should be hard at work on completing their entries for the 2017 Michigan Student Broadcast Awards! The Michigan Student Broadcast Awards are a great way for your students to get their work in front of the professional broadcasters who serve as our judges.  Plus, the entries always serve as great additions to students’ resumes and portfolios.

Anyone can enter!  Schools do not need to have a specific broadcasting curriculum for students to submit their work; it could be a club, English class or a digital media advisor who will sign their application forms.

Back by popular demand is the Current Events Program category in both high school and college. Students can submit a current events program that is no more than five (5) minutes in length. Content should include current or political events. Criteria to be judged on: human interest, subject portrayal and production value.

Drone Regulation Bill Passes Michigan Senate

capitol3Last week, the Michigan Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 992. The legislation allows a person that is authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate unmanned aerial systems (a.k.a. drones) for commercial purposes in a manner consistent with the authorization. The legislation also sets up a legislative drone taskforce to develop statewide policy recommendations on the use/operation of drones. SB 992 mandates that the taskforce must include a member recommended by the MAB to represent the broadcast industry.

The bill leaves some flexibility for the local government entities to regulate how the drones may be operated within their own municipality; however, those regulations must be consistent with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The MAB, along with the Michigan State Police, Michigan Telecommunication and Cable Association and Michigan Association of Realtors, supported this legislation. The MAB believes that this legislation is a balanced approach to regulating drone use. The bills recognize the growing economic and commercial use of the unmanned aerial vehicles across a wide variety of industries including, in our case, broadcasting. The legislation also balances the need for privacy and other considerations by prohibiting knowing and intentional harassment-type practices that interfere with the official duties of the first responders. The bill is now headed to the Michigan House of Representatives Committee on Communications and Technology.

Beasley to Close on Greater Media November 1

Beasley-GreaterMBeasley Broadcast Group Interim CEO and Chief Financial Officer Caroline Beasley has told Inside Radio (10/19) that the company is targeting a November 1 closing date on its acquisition of the Greater Media radio stations.

The deal, first announced July 19, will double the size of Beasley in terms of revenue, cash flow and cume, and put it back into several top 10 markets. The addition will grow Beasley by 21 stations in seven markets with billings that will make it the ninth-largest radio group in the U.S.

The acquisition brings Beasley to Michigan for the first time, as it acquires Detroit stations WCSX-FM, WRIF-FM and WMGC-FM as part of the deal.

WZZM-TV (Grand Rapids) Prepares Sack Suppers for Make a Difference Day

wzzm-1_702wzzm-1_225One in five children in Michigan is affected by hunger. The team at TEGNA-owned WZZM-TV was inspired by that statistic to volunteer at Kids’ Food Basket, as part of Make a Difference Day (MADDay) on October 22. The WZZM staff, their friends and family members prepared snacks to go into sack suppers for thousands of children in West Michigan who cannot depend on an evening meal at home each night. Kids’ Food Basket delivers those sack suppers to more than 7,400 children in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon Counties EACH DAY.

wzzm-2_225The MADDay event also collected more than 100,000 paper lunch bags, into which the meals are packed. The bags were lovingly decorated by families, school classes, church groups and others who want to show their love to a group of kids who so richly deserve it. Make a Difference Day is one of the largest annual single days of service nationwide. WZZM’s parent company, TEGNA, was supported by the Arby’s Foundation and Points of Light in making this year’s campaign possible.

Make a Difference Day unites volunteers from across the country with a common mission: to improve the lives of others through a wide range of community-driven service projects.

I often listen to radio stations talk about pulling all of their digital tools together into a single coherent plan using a Content Marketing strategy. But Content Marketing can be effective on the sales side of the building, too, and can be a catalyst for generating new business.

For example, Content Marketing can be a powerful tool for generating sales leads and building your station’s marketing credibility. By publishing content that interests potential advertisers, radio stations can attract more business. This short video explains how the concept works:


Content Marketing with Webinars

One of the best ways to employ Content Marketing for lead generation is through the use of webinars. The concept is simple: When advertisers, marketers and clients register for a webinar, you capture their email address. You can then engage them in a lead nurturing email campaign, periodically sending them other useful and relevant content. This keeps your radio station top of mind, so when they are ready to advertise, they are more likely to seek you out.

WGVU Presents Food, Wine & All That Jazz Fundraiser

wgvu_700This Friday, October 28, WGVU Public Media will hold a fundraiser at the Grand Rapids Public Museum from 7:30 – 10 p.m.

Attendees can enjoy samples of over 400 of the finest domestic wines and beers along with gourmet food selections, all for one ticket price.  In addition, live jazz will be provided by The Steve Higler Band.

Longtime Lansing Anchor Jane Aldrich to Retire from WLNS-TV

After more than 30 years at WLNS-TV (Lansing), anchor Jane Aldrich will hang up her microphone and retire from the station.

jane-aldrich_275“I just feel that it’s time,” explained Aldrich. “I have been honored to be invited into your home to share the day’s news with you for over three decades, and the staff and management at TV-6 have been wonderful to me and my family through the years.”

Jane started as an anchor and reporter at 6 News back on October 14, 1985. She spent decades at the desk anchoring various shows, including 6 News at Noon, 5, 6, and 11 p.m.

Over the years, Jane has become one of the most recognizable and most beloved figures in the greater Lansing area.

“Jane is the real deal. She’s full of caring and compassion,” said General Manager Bob Simone. “She genuinely cares about people and the community, and the reason viewers love her is because they see that, too.”

Among her other accomplishments, Jane:

  • Founded the franchise called “Tell Me Something Good” – reporting good news, as well as interesting and inspirational stories, and won numerous awards for her work.
  • Hosted a health care forum in Lansing alongside then-President Bill Clinton.
  • Has also hosted or led hundreds, if not thousands, of events over the years for a variety of causes. For many years, she co-hosted the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Labor Day Telethon. Among the other causes and organizations she has supported are the Alzheimer’s Association, the Hospice of Lansing, Special Olympics, the Greater Lansing Food Bank, and Lansing Community College.

Jane’s last day on the anchor desk will be some time in mid-January.
