On Thursday, February 2, CBS Radio’s WOMC-FM (Detroit) will be hosting a day-long radiothon to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit.
The station will be broadcasting live from the food bank from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and soliciting donations from listeners who then may become “Hunger Heros.”
All donors who pledge to make an annual commitment of $20/month or a one-time gift of $240 or more will become a “Hunger Hero” and receive an official 2017 104.3 WOMC Children’s Hunger Radiothon insulated tote bag compliments of your Michigan Dairy Farm Families. Each “Hunger Hero” helps provide 120 meals each month!
On January 26, WXMI-TV/FOX 17 (Grand Rapids) and Consumers Energy presented the third annual Pay It Forward Awards Gala. This invitation-only lunch event was held at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Its purpose was to honor the 2016 recipients of the Consumers Energy Pay It Forward Person of the Month Award and announce the recipient of the Consumers Energy Pay It Forward Person of the Year Award. In addition, seven new Pay It Forward Person of the Year categories were introduced and awarded at the event.
WXMI-TV began its Pay It Forward initiative in November 2010. The goal was to highlight West Michigan citizens who give of their time, talent and treasure while expecting nothing in return. The initiative received so much positive feedback that the station decided to make it an ongoing campaign. Since then they’ve aired at least one story per week, highlighting people and organizations in West Michigan who pay it forward and make West Michigan a better place.
Award recipients were nominated by the public, the honorees recognized at the event included:

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation is excited to announce 2017 scholarship opportunities that are open to Michigan students!!
All scholarships assist in tuition and fees at a Michigan college or university, with ALL applications due to the MAB Foundation by Friday, February 17, 2017. All scholarships will be awarded during the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference (GLBC) on Wednesday, March 8 in Lansing.

MAB Foundation Board Scholarship “Friends of Bill Burton Scholarship”
The MAB Foundation Board is pleased to announce a college scholarship opportunity that is open to any student NOT receiving another MAB Foundation Scholarship in 2017.
The MAB Foundation board will award one $1,000 scholarship during the GLBC in March. This opportunity is open to any Michigan college student pursuing a career in a broadcast or media related field. Applications are due February 17, 2017 and winners will be announced in March.
MAB Foundation High School Scholarships For High School Seniors ONLY – The MAB Foundation will once again offer two $750 scholarships to Michigan High School students! Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
This opportunity is open to any Michigan High School senior with plans to pursue a degree in a broadcast or media related program at a Michigan college or university. Applications are due February 17, 2017 and winners will be announced in March.
Station Sponsored Scholarship Program
Also available in 2017 for Michigan college students, is the Station Sponsored Scholarship Program, which is run through the MAB Foundation. These are one-time, $1,000 scholarships sponsored by a Michigan radio or television station and will be awarded on March 8 at the GLBC.

Last year, we rebuilt the Jacobs Media website from the ground up to enable us to execute the same type of Content Marketing strategy that we recommend to our radio station clients. This post is the second in a series explaining what we did and how your radio station can do the same thing. If you missed last week’s post, you may want to start by reading it first.

Once we figured out where we were going, the next task was to figure out how to get there. That starts with the website. It always does. To properly execute a Content Marketing strategy, you will need a website that makes it easy to create, publish, and edit content.
A Content Management System
A website that makes it easy to manage content is called, not surprisingly, a Content Management System (CMS). Your radio station will need a CMS website if it hopes to execute a successful Content Marketing Strategy.Here are the key features of a Content Management System:
It is easy to add, edit and delete content.
It allows you to have multiple users, each with a unique login username and password.
It allows you to assign roles with different capabilities to different users; for example, an Author may be able to create content but not publish it to the live site, while an Editor may be able to create and publish content.
It enables you to establish an editorial process; for example, one person may write a blogpost, then another reviews and a third publishes it.
It is optimized for search engines; in other words, it makes it easy for sites like Google and Yahoo! To include your content in its search results.
It makes sharing content on social media easy; for example, it allows you to add “social sharing” buttons to each blogpost.
There are a number of different CMS platforms out there, but one of the most popular is WordPress. WordPress is a free CMS that is used by about a quarter of the world’s websites. It offers a number of advantages for radio broadcasters:
1. It’s free.
WordPress is free to use. Out of the box, it comes with limited functionality, but you can add a number of “plugins” to it to enable it to do additional things. Just about anything you want to do, somebody else has probably built a plugin for it already. Some of these plugins are free and can be of questionable quality, while other plugins cost money but are well maintained and supported.
2. Developers are easy to find.
Radio stations tend to see a lot of turnover when it comes to web developers because developers often find that they can make higher salaries doing the same jobs in other industries. Because so many websites are built in WordPress, finding a new WordPress developer if yours leaves is not difficult — it’s a common skill.
3. It plays nice with all of your other digital tools.
WordPress can be easily integrated with a number of different online tools, from email service providers like Constant Contact and Mailchimp, to form builders like Formstack and Gravity Forms, to video hosting services like YouTube and Vimeo. You’ll want to combine multiple digital tools into a single coherent strategy, and WordPress will make that possible.
We chose to build our new site in WordPress for a few additional reasons:
Fred has been blogging daily for over a decade in WordPress. By continuing to use WordPress, we would easily be able to export the blog from the old site and import it into the new site.
By continuing to use WordPress, Fred would not have to learn a new system.
I have a lot of experience building WordPress websites. While I am not a computer programmer by any stretch, I do know how to build a website with the goal of capturing email addresses in mind.
Keep in mind, while I highly recommend it, you don’t need to build your radio station’s website in WordPress to have a successful Content Marketing strategy. However, you will need to build in a CMS platform of some kind.

WJBK-TV/FOX2 (Detroit) has announced a new anchor lineup.
Amy Andrews has been promoted to weekday morning anchor. She’ll accompany Jay Towers on the FOX 2 Morning News.
Deena Centofanti and Maurielle Lue will team up to anchor The Nine.
Raj Roop will take Andrews’ place at 11 a.m. and Lue’s position on The Nine. Lue will continue anchoring from 4:30 to 6 a.m. weekdays and on weekend mornings with co-anchor Charlie Langton.
WJBK VP/News Director Kevin Rosenborough said “We are fortunate to possess a wealth of talent in our morning show lineup, Amy is a presence in the studio and a tireless community supporter outside the station. Her pairing with Jay Towers matches two of Detroit’s best broadcasters. Deena is known to a generation of metro Detroiters through her anchoring and insightful health reports and Maurielle’s polish and personality make her a powerful force on morning television and in social media.”
Bill Emkow has been named the new digital director for WXYZ/WMYD-TV (Detroit). Emkow is an innovative media executive with 19 years of experience growing audience engagement on multiple platforms.
Most recently, Emkow was the senior content strategist at the Detroit Free Press, where he created original social media content that generated revenue, including “Talkin’ Lions,” a weekly multimedia show on Facebook Live.
Emkow was also with MLive Media Group, developing and executing programming that increased digital audiences. From 2008 to 2016, MLive.com was the most popular local site in Michigan according to comScore. At MLive, Emkow worked as the director of sports, director of state news and editor-in-chief of MLive.com.
“Bill is a seasoned journalist and a creative thinker who brings tremendous experience in news and social media to the role of digital director,” said Mike Murri, vice president and general manager of WXYZ and WMYD. “We’re looking forward to having Bill on our team as we work to expand our digital footprint and engage viewers on all platforms.”
“I’m thrilled to join the talented team at WXYZ as digital director,” said Emkow. “I see a world of opportunity at Channel 7, and I have new ideas that I’m looking forward to putting into action as we develop new approaches to digital storytelling in metro Detroit and expand audience engagement.”
Emkow graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in journalism. He’s a history buff and a big fan of Detroit sports teams, especially the Tigers and the Lions.
All Access reports that Alpha Media/Saginaw has promoted WCEN-FM Program Director/Afternoon Host Joby Phillips, taking on additional program director duties at sister station WGER-FM.
Phillips will retain his present WCEN-FM duties.
In addition, the company has named former WGER-FM afternoon host Ray Storey as Music Director/Morning Host for the station. Before joining WGER-FM in 2010, Storey was an air talent for both WRCL-FM (Flint) and WKFR-FM (Kalamazoo).
