MAB Board Profile: Ed Fernandez

MAB News Briefs is pleased to bring you profiles of your MAB Board of Directors.

This week’s profile is Ed Fernandez.  

Ed Fernandez is a Michigan native with a distinguished career as a broadcast executive. He serves as Detroit-based Vice-President and Divisional General Manager for E.W. Scripps, overseeing the company’s stations in Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Green Bay, Lansing, Milwaukee as well as the company’s Azteca America properties. Prior to his current role, he was VP & GM of WXYZ & WMYD in Detroit. Prior to joining E.W. Scripps, he served as president and general manager of WSNS-TV (Telemundo) in Chicago.

Fernandez also worked for 14 years at WXMI Fox 17 in Grand Rapids. He joined the station as a local sales manager, served as general sales manager, station manager and eventually became Vice President/General Manager. Earlier in his career, he served as an account executive for WSB-TV in Atlanta, WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, and WOOD-TV, also in Grand Rapids.

He is currently Immediate Past Chairman of the MAB, having served on all positions of the MAB Board of Directors.

Fernandez, whose stations have won numerous local Emmys and Station of the Year acknowledgements, has received a number of awards, including the Central Michigan University Distinguished Alumni award, Grand Rapids Business Journal “Forty Under Forty” award and St. Augustine College’s “El Puente” award for his commitment to the Chicago Hispanic community.

Originally from West Michigan, he earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast and cinematic arts from Central Michigan University. He was also the Robert R. McCormick/Tribune Foundation Fellowship Recipient through National Association of Broadcasters.

MAB News Briefs is pleased to bring you profiles of your MAB Board of Directors.

This week’s profile is Peter Tanz.   Peter is Senior Vice President for Midwest Communications, a family broadcasting company with radio stations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Peter has been on the MAB Board of Directors since 2012, has served as Treasurer and is currently Vice-Chairman/Chairman Elect.  He has chaired several MAB committees and is valued by his peers.  Peter has also served on the MAB Foundation Board.

Peter joined Midwest Communications in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as an advertising sales representative in 1985 and was promoted to General Manager in 1987. He managed stations in
Wausau, WI; and Lincoln and Omaha, NE before coming to Michigan in 1995.

In Michigan, he works with Midwest’s 14 stations in Battle Creek, Coldwater, Holland, Kalamazoo and Lansing.

Peter is involved with many community organizations and is past chair of the Coldwater and Kalamazoo Chambers of Commerce and the Kalamazoo Visitor and Convention Bureau.

MAB Board Profile: Rob David

This week’s profile is Rob David.   Rob is President/General Manager of Handyman Productions, a radio program syndicator, which produces and distributes the award-winning Handyman Show with Glenn Haege. The show is heard on over 20 stations in Michigan and more than 140 stations across the country.

He founded Handyman Productions after an extensive radio broadcasting sales and management career at WGMZ-FM in Flint; and at WXYT-AM (WXYZ-AM) / WMXD-FM in Detroit.

Rob is a long serving board member and former chairperson of the MAB Foundation Board and was the inaugural recipient of the MAB ‘Associate of the Year’ award.

He is a proud graduate and supporter of Michigan State University and was presented with the ‘MSU Alumni Service Award’ and named an ‘Outstanding Alumnus’ by the Eli Broad College of Business.

Outside of broadcasting, he is a recent graduate of the FBI Citizen’s Academy and serves on various community organization and boards. In addition, he is a distinguished member of the Consular Corps as the Honorary Consul for Grenada.

The Honorable Robert David and his wife, Marcia, reside in Novi.

MAB Board Profile: Michael Renda

This week’s profile is Michael Renda.   Michael is Vice President and General Manager for WJBK-TV (FOX 2) in Detroit.

He began his broadcast career in radio at WOHO in Toledo, Ohio in 1977 as a Local Account Executive.  Shortly thereafter, Michael moved to across the street to WTVG-TV in the same capacity.  Storer Television was the next stop for Mike, moving to Chicago as the National Sales Representative. Stops in New York and Cleveland followed with Renda taking the General Sales Manager position at WJW-TV in 1989.

After a five year tenure as General Sales Manager at WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Renda returned to WJW-TV in Cleveland, this time as VP and General Manager. Renda served as WJW’s General Manager for 10 years before accepting a similar position at WTXF-TV (Fox 29) in Philadelphia in April 2007.

Chicago was next and another VP and General Manager position at WFLD-TV/WPWR-TV, overseeing both the Fox and MyNetwork Television stations from September 2009 through January 2013.

Renda graduated from Miami University (Ohio) in 1976. He’s married to Susan and has two children, Matt and Emily.

In August, Michael began his second year on the MAB Board of Directors.

MAB Board Profile: Scott Shigley

This week’s profile is Scott Shigley.   Scott is the General Manager of the Liggett Communications stations in Port Huron.

Scott started his broadcast career in sales at the Liggett owned station in Lansing, WFMK-FM in 1993. He began his sales management career in 1998, managing stations in Adrian (Friends Communications WQTE-FM/WABJ-AM/WBZV-FM), Port Huron (Liggett Communications WSAQ-FM/WBTI-FM/WPHM-AM/WHLS-AM/WHLX-AM), and Greater Media Detroit (WMGC-FM/WCSX-FM).

After that, Scott worked in advertising sales at Fox Sports Detroit before having the opportunity to return to his adopted hometown of Port Huron in 2011, where Scott assumed the General Manager position for Liggett Communications in July 2014. Scott manages WSAQ, WBTI, WPHM, WHLS and WHLX.

He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Reading Schools in lower Michigan. Scott is married to wife Christine and they have three children: Kalyn, Isaac and Avery and two grandchildren. Scott loves to do anything outdoors, especially playing golf, coaching softball and watching U-M football games.

MAB Board Profile: Stephen A. Marks

This week’s profile is Stephen A. Marks.   Stephen is 100% shareholder, President/CEO of Thunder Bay Broadcasting Corporation, which owns WBKB-TV (Alpena); Lake Superior Community Broadcasting, which operates WBUP-TV (Ishpeming/Marquette) and WBKP-TV (Calumet); Houghton Community Broadcasting, which operates WOLV-FM, WHKB-FM, and WCCY-AM (Houghton); and Iron River Community Broadcasting Corporation, which operates WFER-AM and WIKB-FM (Iron River).  He also owns a number of other television and radio stations throughout the country.

Stephen started his broadcasting career at the age of 17 as a copy writer at WINX Radio in Rockville, Maryland. While there, he was able to learn enough to pass the FCC 3rd class with number 9 endorsement license test. His early career was spent in radio holding positions from marketing to management. That included working with Mutual Broadcasting Systems (MBS) in Affiliate Programming and Syndication, after graduating in 1973 from American University in Washington D.C. In 1983 he acquired 51% of Thunder Bay Broadcasting Corporation in Alpena.

Stephen has been on the MAB Board since 2013.  Prior to that, he was deeply involved with the MAB Foundation, serving on its board from 2008 through 2013, remaining an honorary board member today.  In addition, the Stephen A. Marks Foundation funds two student scholarships at the President’s Endowment Level in the MABF Founders Club.

MAB Board Profile: Zoe Burdine-Fly

This week’s profile is Zoe Burdine-Fly, Market President of the Townsquare Media properties in Lansing and Flint.  Zoe has been on the MAB Board since 2014 and is currently Director At-Large.

Zoe Burdine-Fly brings over 25 years of media leadership experience from major media companies like Townsquare Media, Clear Channel, and Citadel Communications in Markets like Lansing, Flint, Syracuse, and Chicago… best known for her energetic spirit, creativity and tenacity, she has been in a leadership role in one form or another since the early 1990’s in the radio industry.  Prior to her time in Michigan, Zoe was the Regional Vice President for Townsquare Media in New Jersey, where she was named one of the top 50 Most Influential Women in the Radio Industry by Radio Inc.

Zoe has two daughters and resides in Lansing with her husband, Jim.
