E. W. Scripps Washington Bureau reporter Ross Jones has announced that he will be returning to WXYZ-TV (Detroit) beginning February 1.
A Michigan State University graduate, Jones joined the station in 2005. He moved to Scripps’ Washington Bureau in September of 2015.
Jones wrote on social media “Candidly, I’ve felt the tug to return more than a few times since I left in 2015, often while the big stories were playing out,” said Jones. “But it’s the ones that we all nearly missed that ultimately convinced me it’s time to come home.”
While at WXYZ, Jones won various awards for his work, including an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for his investigation of waste and corruption in Wayne County government. He was also named “Journalist of the Year” in 2013 by Wayne State University’s School of Journalism. The Detroit Chapter Society of Professional Journalists named him its Young Journalist of the Year in 2012.
“Ross is one of the most relentless and resourceful investigators in the country. His work makes a difference and is a tremendous boost for Scripps media organizations across the country,” said WXYZ News Director Dave Manney in a statement published in Crain’s Detroit Business.
