WKAR Announces Endowment for Student Experiential Learning

WKAR Public Media (East Lansing), mid-Michigan’s source for PBS, NPR and award-winning original television and radio programming, has announced a $4,000 goal for “Give Green Day” on November 27.

Each year at WKAR, MSU student interns experience hands-on training, live production and the dynamic environment WKAR offers for nurturing tomorrow’s storytellers in an ever-changing media landscape. WKAR alums have gone on to work with some of the top media outlets in the country, such as the NFL, ESPN, NPR and in Hollywood.

The WKAR Endowment for Student Experiential Learning will open up more opportunities for Communication Arts and Sciences students to gain knowledge, skills and insights in preparation for their future. Funds will support expanded opportunities for paid employment and internships in television, radio and online media production; non-profit fundraising; media administration; and marketing and promotion.

Behind the Scenes of “The KSHE Tapes” Podcast with The U-Man and Favazz

When I was working in the programming department of WBCN in Boston back at the beginning of this century, we had a closet full of recordings that had accumulated over the years. These include several decades’ worth of performances by and interviews with bands like The Ramones, Pearl Jam and Linkin Park. I have often wondered what happened to that treasure trove of music history. As I’ve watched the internet grow over the years, I’ve frequently thought about how many people would love to listen to those recordings online.

As it turns out, I’m not the only person who had that thought. Morning host John “The U-Man” Ulett and afternoon drive jock Guy “Favazz” Favazza of KSHE 95 in St. Louis, another legendary rock station with decades of heritage to mine, have launched a new podcast called “The KSHE Tapes” which features interviews from the station’s past. They’ve dug up old conversations with some of rock’s biggest names, including Paul McCartney, Slash, Alice Cooper, and Sammy Hagar. I asked them to tell me more about the podcast… –Seth

1. Tell us about The KSHE Tapes.
We host the show together, and between the two of us, we have plenty of interviews to choose from. We take one each week, set it up, and play it back. However, we pause the interview at times to ask questions of each other or make comments. It makes for good banter.

2. John, how did the show come about?
For a while, we were mulling over what to do with a room full of tapes filled with KSHE history — not all of which are interviews. We’ve also been thinking about what would make a good KSHE podcast. Someone from one of our Hubbard stations in Cincinnati suggested that we do something with past interviews. So Favazz and I decided to use them in a podcast, but not just play them back; we comment throughout the playback and inject ourselves into the interviews to update things, or highlight something important, or even make light of something.

3. Describe the process of making the show.
We decide by Monday of each week which interview we will do. We text one another ideas and go from there. We record on Wednesday and post the episode on Friday. We might listen to parts of the interview beforehand to get an idea of what we might ask each other during recording. The biggest challenge — but not that big — was getting our engineering staff to bring a minidisc player and a DAT player into the production studio so we could use them for the show. Some of the interviews are even archived on reel to reel tape, but we have that covered too. We even play the parts of the interviews that never made it onto the air like the mic checks.

4. As you listen back to the archive of interviews, have you found any favorite moments?
We’re still mining the vault, so who knows what we’ll find, but at this point: Paul McCartney came across as so warm and friendly that we grew to admire him even more after hearing the interview.


5. Favazz, what have you learned in the course of making this podcast?
I think we’ve both learned that making a podcast is kinda fun. Listening back to old interviews is painful at times, but the content is what we enjoy the most. I have the easy part, as John does any editing the show might need. And I’m pretty sure we enjoy working with each other. John’s been doing mornings forever and I’m in my 20th year of afternoon drive. While we aren’t in the air studio at the same time, we’re golfing partners, so we knew our chemistry would work.

6. How are you promoting the podcast?
We’re promoting it on social media outlets and on the air. A recorded promo spot is being formulated. Word of mouth has also been strong.

7. Based on your experience so far, what advice would you give to other radio stations looking to turn their archived interviews into a podcast? Any surprises?
Dig up the interviews no matter what form they’re in and have fun with them. This week, we’ll be doing an interview that’s on cassette. Who knows when we’ll do one on reel to reel? You need a cooperative engineering staff to make all that happen. We are in the early stages, and while we wouldn’t change anything right now, it will evolve.

We’ve been most surprised at the number of downloads already. After two weeks and three episodes, we’ve already had almost 4,500 downloads. That’s pretty good. We are both proud that we host the first podcast ever for KSHE. That’s no small thing after 51 years in existence!

Meet Your MAB Board Member of the Week: Brad Lanser

Brad Lanser is Vice-President, General Manager of Lansing Broadcasting.  Brad began his career in broadcasting a little over 20 years ago. He started out as a Sales Consultant and later took over the General Manager duties along with becoming Vice-President and eventually, part owner.  Lanser Broadcasting currently operates two
radio stations (JQ99 and “The Pledge”) in the Grand Rapids market.

Before coming to Lanser Broadcasting, Brad owned a Landscape Company and operated it for 10 years prior to joining the Broadcast ranks.

WION’s ‘Treasures for Troops’ Celebrates 5 Years

It’s been five years since WION (Ionia) began “Treasures for Troops.” Since then, it’s grown each year, and it’s going on this week! It kicked off Monday afternoon with a broadcast in Muir, and there’s two more broadcasts this week, one from the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday and a wrap-up at Young Automotive’s GM store in South Ionia on Friday.

All the collected proceeds are sorted then boxed on Sunday of the collection week. Last year, 200 boxes were sent to deployed servicemen and women thanks to the generosity of listeners and businesses.

This year, WION invited sister station WGLM in Greenville/Lakeview to participate collecting, and is especially proud of a new partnership with the Lowell Schools’ LPFM, (WRWW-LP) in which students promoted their collection for the drive on the school station, in the halls, and in their community! WION plans to have some of those students on the air during their broadcast from the Lowell Chamber.

If early donations are any indication, this year the drive may exceed it’s 250 box unofficial goal. There have also been donations for the (predicted, approximate) $4300 needed for postage for the project from local restaurants, Reurink Roofing & Siding Sales in Ionia, and even from a radio station engineer who listens in another state to WION’s AM stereo online stream!

WION hopes to have final numbers for the MAB to report in the next newsletter.

WJLB Begins 35th Annual Coats For Kids Benefit

On November 3, iHeartMedia’s WJLB-FM (Detroit) kicked off its 35th annual Coats for Kids radiothon.  It’s a fundraiser for the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit.

The kickoff live broadcast aired from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the Adams Butzel Community Center. Senior Vice-President Tony Travatto told All Access: “iHeartMedia/Detroit is passionate about the greater Detroit community and committed to its advancement. We look forward to bringing everyone of all ages together to collect coats and money for those who need a little extra help during the cold Michigan winters.”

Listeners were encouraged to attend and donate funds or new coats. The event was hosted by station personalities Bushman, Kirby Gwen, Dr. Darrius and KSmoot, along with live mix DJs and celebrity appearances.  At the kickoff event, between coats and cash, the station collected over $38,000 to keep kids warm in Detroit this winter.  Highlights of the event included a surprise visit from Tee Grizzley with 100 new coats in tow, Flipp Dinero giving a young man literally the coat off his back and incredible performances by Sada Baby and other local and national artists.

Coats for Kids continues through December.

Nielsen Audio Announces Annual Market Rank Revision including Michigan Tweaks

Nielsen Audio has just released its Fall 2018 population rankings, resulting in some minor tweaks around the country.  Among the bigger moves seen in the new rankings is that of the Tampa-St. Petersburg radio market. It jumps to #18 from #19.  Lakeland-Winter Haven, Fla., market up from #91 to #88.

In Michigan, markets unchanged include Detroit (#13), Grand Rapids (#68), Lansing-East Lansing (#128) and Kalamazoo (#185).

Michigan markets that have shifted ranks are Flint, which moves #138 to #139; Ann Arbor, moving #150 to #149, Saginaw-Bay City-Midland moving #149 to #150; Traverse City-Petoskey-Cadillac moving #159 to #158; Muskegon #232 to #230 and Battle Creek moves from #254 to #252.

WMGC Announces New On-Air Lineup

This week, Beasley Media Group’s WMGC-FM (Detroit/105.1 The Bounce) announced a new on-air lineup.  Sliding into the morning show position from afternoons is “The Gello Show,” featuring Gello and Joanna.


Former morning co-host Shay-Shay has now moved to the midday slot.

A new afternoon host has not yet been announced, but should be announced shortly.

WSYM To Air Lansing Silver Bells Parade

Again this year, E.W. Scripps’ WSYM-TV (Lansing) will air the city’s annual Silver Bells Electric Light Parade this Friday Night beginning at 6 p.m.  It’s the 5th year the station has broadcast the parade live.

The parade will have 76 illuminated floats and marching bands with an expected crowd of 60,000 people along the parade route.

The broadcast will be anchored by WSYM Morning Blend Host Bob Hoffman, News Anchor Sarah Swistak and Mark Buzzitta of Capitol Area District Library and WLNZ-FM.

The station will replay the parade broadcast on Thanksgiving morning as it has done in the past.

WXYZ To Air Detroit Tree Lighting

WXYZ-TV (Detroit) will make the holiday season a little brighter for Detroit residents as the station will air the lighting of the city’s official Christmas tree at Campus Martius Park in the heart of downtown Detroit. WXYZ will broadcast complete coverage of the event during a live special, “Light Up the Season,” from 7- 8 p.m. on November 16.

7 Action News anchors Dave LewAllen and Carolyn Clifford will host the program, along with 7 Action News anchors Glenda Lewis and Alan Campbell. The show will include musical performances from Detroit’s own gospel legend Ce Ce Winans along with the jazz sounds of Ben Sharkey and the Woodward Horns. U.S. Olympic figure skating duo Alex and Maia Shibutani will perform on the rink at Campus Martius during the show.

The celebration will also include live shots of the activities at Detroit’s Beacon Park. “We are pleased to share this great holiday celebration with people across Metro Detroit,” said Mike Murri, WXYZ and WMYD vice president and general manager. “The Christmas tree at Campus Martius Park has become the centerpiece for holiday celebrations in Detroit. We’re proud to share the beauty of our great city and partner with the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the DTE Energy Foundation for this wonderful holiday tradition.”

This is the 15th year for the Downtown Detroit Partnership’s annual tree lighting ceremony. The centerpiece of this year’s event is a 60-foot Norway spruce tree that was donated by a family in Plymouth, Michigan. The tree will be decked out with more than 19,000 colored lights and ornaments.

WXYZ will begin live coverage on Friday in “The NOW” at 4 p.m. 7 Action News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. will capture all the excitement leading up to the big moment, including a special interview with Santa.

“Light Up the Season” will also be streamed live on wxyz.com and on the WXYZ Facebook page.

Diane Kniowski Joins Univision

Former MAB Board Chair (2009) Diane Kniowski has joined radio and television group owner Univision Communications as President and Regional GM of Local Media.  Kniowski will be based in Univision’s Doral, Florida headquarters and will report directly to Univision CEO Vincent Sadusky.

Sadusky is the former President/CEO of Media General, which owned WOOD-TV (Grand Rapids) where Kniowski served as General Manager.  Upon the sale of Media General to Nexstar Broadcasting, Kniowski advanced to the role of Senior Vice-President and Regional Manager.

“Diane’s experience operating a group of top-rated local TV and digital properties is a perfect fit for Univision’s local media group,” Sadusky said. “Diane understands how to build communities and her creative solutions will serve our audiences and advertisers well. The foundation of Univision for more than 50 years has been built on the strength of its local television and radio stations, many of which are among the highest consumed, English or Spanish.”
